With 97 points and just five defeats, it has been a remarkable season for John Mousinho’s men, whose heroics have etched them into Blues folklore.
Here’s our overall ratings and assessment of the 31 first-team players involved in Pompey’s memorable 2023-24 campaign...
29. Abu Kamara - 9.5
(52 games, 10 goals)Started the season on the bench, with Anthony Scully and Gavin Whyte preferred on the wings, yet Kamara went on to feature in every League One match and establish himself as one of the most important players. Handed his first loan away from Norwich, he scored 10 goals and claimed 10 assists, while his pace, directness and ability to deliver from the byline have been a constant in Pompey's attacking play. Initially asked to play on the left, which he wasn't comfortable with, the youngster has flourished more on the right and, even when looking tired of late, still manages to effect games. Denied a farewell goal at Lincoln by the post, but it doesn't diminish a magnificent Fratton Park stay. Photo: Jason Brown
30. Kusini Yengi - 9
(31 games, 13 goals)Describes himself as a big-game player and the powerful striker has definitely proved that during an outstanding first season in English football. Scored on his debut as a late substitute to rescue a point on the opening day against Bristol Rovers and hasn't looked back. Yengi would also register on his full debut, while enjoying a strong final six weeks of the season. That included the pivotal 1-0 victory at Peterborough, where he came off the bench to net a 77th-minute winner. Raw, unpredictable, a handful, but always capable of making things happen, his dismantling of Bolton's Ricardo Santos lives long in the memory. His Blues form earned an Australia international breakthrough, with the club losing him in January through Asian Cup duty. Photo: Jason Brown
31. Colby Bishop - 9
(48 games, 21 goals)Has now broken the 20-goal barrier in successive seasons for the Blues as the former Accrington man continues to excel. At one stage was stung by criticism from Pompey fans, largely through social media, but continued to plunder goals. The team's evolution meant he was no longer the sole focal point for goals, with others also chipping in compared to the previous campaign, which proved important. Nonetheless, Bishop's work-rate, commitment and finishing skills are largely unmatched in League One and he remains a class act.
