Triumph mixed with tragedy in a busy life
HENRY James Redknapp – universally known as Harry – was born in London in 1947.
His playing career began at West Ham United where he signed as a 17-year-old in 1964. In 1972, he transferred to Bournemouth and became manager in 1983.
In June 1990, while watching the World Cup in Italy, he was involved a car crash with Bournemouth's managing director Brian Tiler, who died along with four others.
Redknapp recovered but now has no sense of smell.
He became West Ham manager in 1994 and joined Portsmouth in 2001.
Throughout his career he has raised thousands of pounds for children's charities and always takes time to meet young fans.
He was set to take part in last year's Great South Run for the Make a Wish Foundation for children with life-threatening illnesses, but injury stopped him.
His son, Jamie Redknapp, played under him at Bournemouth and Southampton. His nephew is Chelsea player Frank Lampard. He dedicated his FA Cup win to his wife of 40 years, Sandra.
