Harry: FA won't want me

HARRY REDKNAPP raised questions over the FA's recruitment policy and insisted: They wouldn't want me as England manager.
The Pompey boss is now the shortest-priced English coach among bookmakers to take over from Steve McClaren, who was axed this week after failing to guide England to Euro 2008.

With Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill ruling himself out of the running yesterday and Jose Mourinho unlikely to be interested, the number of viable candidates is declining rapidly.

Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has emerged as the bookies' favourite, but momentum is growing for Redknapp – a skilled man-manager who has the ability to get the very best from his players.

Asked if he would take the job if it was offered to him, Redknapp replied: 'It's a hypothetical question. But I don't think they would offer it to me – that's the feeling you get.

'My name will get mentioned with loads of other names. Everywhere you look, there are different names coming up, so who knows who they will go for?

'I don't take too much notice of it. There is always speculation about who they will pick.'

When asked if an Englishman should lead the national team, Redknapp turned to sarcasm to make a point on the FA's failure to pick the right man for the job in the past.

He smiled: 'I don't know, we're not as clever as these foreign guys are we?

'They are better than us tactically, much cleverer than us and they probably went to better schools than we went to, where I'm sure they all learnt about football.

'Over the years, the FA have been good at picking managers, though, haven't they?

'Look at Brian Clough. He didn't do a very good job at Nottingham Forest and Derby did he?

'When you look back, you can understand why he didn't get the England job because he won only the two European Cups.

'I'm sure they will pick the right man again.'

It is noticeable that the Sun has given 'Arry nigh on a full page "advert" in the sports pages and the Mail has not even mentioned him in any significant article at all. This sums up the divergence of opinions over him. My opinin?......... the FA could do FAR worse than appointing him as the new manager!

I really don't want to see Harry going for the England job. Firstly, we need him at Pompey. Can you really imagine anyone coming in and doing the job he's done? We couldn't replace him. Secondly, he's not the best man for the job - he hasn't won anything as a player or a coach. Thirdly, he's not good at getting the best out of English (or even British players) - see GON and Matthew Taylor. Now as a Pompey fan I don't care about that - wherever they come from I'm happy if they win us games. But you can't work transfer magic in the England squad. You're stuck with millionaire wide boys like Lampard who won't perform for the national side. So stay at Pompey Harry!

I think it would be interesting to see what harry coud do as England mananger, hes shaped this team into a force so him combined with the top English players in the country , who knows. Tho id rather him stay at pompey to be honest as newtown81 said we couldnt replace him. Disagree however that harry couldnt get the best out of English/British players , he always manages to squeeze everything out of the players he works with , e.g Kanu!!

I would hate to see Harry leave Pompey. What manager could take his place and succeed? In all honesty I sincerely believe that we could be facing relegation this time next year, if Harry takes the England managers job. But as Harry said, how can he refuse to turn down such a prestigous job such as his country? He cant, hes the right man for the job. If he is given it, and accepts, then we should wish him all the success, and back him. And lets hope that he has trained Tony Adams to take over!

How will Pompey fare against Cardiff in the FA Cup final?
Pompey are too good for them. We will win at a canter!
It will be tight, but Harry's boys will just nick it.
Cardiff will break Blues hearts and destroy the Cup dream!
It will go to the lottery of penalties and then it's anybody's guess!
