Left is just right for Niko
LEFT is right for Niko Kranjcar, even if it does have supporters and pundits alike scratching their heads.
The cultured Croat continues to shine, having finally made the first-team breakthrough this season.
Before today's Plymouth FA Cup clash, he had chalked up 18-successive appearances during an impressive personal campaign.
Yet the question marks continue to linger over which truly is his best side.
Naturally right footed, such is the 23-year-old's talent he is also more than capable of striking a ball to perfection with his left peg.
It partly explains Kranjcar's comfort for operating on the left-hand side of Pompey's midfield this season, producing eye-catching displays which hastened the departure of Matt Taylor.
But then again, perhaps he would be more at home in his natural habit on the right-hand side?
A right footer in a left footer's position. A round peg in a square hole.
Yet as far as Kranjcar's concerned, he loves it there.
He said: 'My best goal ever was actually with my left foot. I don't know why, it was a long time ago.
'Playing on the left is not a problem, though. If anything I prefer it, even if I am naturally right footed.
'I am more comfortable coming on to the left side, probably because of the positioning.
'When you get the ball you can keep it away from defenders easier.
'Whereas, when you are on the right-hand side you have to position your body differently and I find that more difficult to deal with.
'It's strange, I know, but I feel more comfortable there and that suits me more.
'It's something I noticed during my youth. Even when I play more central I want to drift off to the left and attack down that side.
'I just feel much better on the left. I can cut in and I come out again – that's just how I like to play.'
Kranjcar's ability with both feet has emerged as an extra weapon in his creative armoury.
The basics have always been there but he believes it's something which has flourished with plenty of hard work.
He added: 'I think it's a lot to do with talent, you are just born with it.
'People say David Beckham can't use his left but then again his right foot is that perfect he doesn't need to work on the other.
'When you have got something good the most important things is to work on that.
'But I also practiced with my left foot when I was younger and I feel that has really helped me.'
