RNLI engineers from across the country are to be trained in Portsmouth.
The RNLI has signed a deal with VT Flagship to train 62 crewmen in how to use its new state-of-the-art Tamar vessel.
The charity has 10 of the new 16-metre boats stationed around the country, including two based at Poole, which use advanced technology.
The charity has refused to reveal the value of the contract, but it is believed to be in the low hundreds of thousands.
Matt Johnson, electronics repair centre manager, based in Poole, said: 'We're working on a 365-day, 24-hour cover, and will go out in all weathers, so you can imagine if you're sailing for four hours in Force 12, monitoring engines and so on becomes difficult.
'If you can stay in the same place you take that risk factor down, and that's what our new SIMs system does.
'It will most definitely save lives. We need to be in a perpetual state of readiness.'
