One of the region's most familiar names to drivers has won an award for its green credentials.
Fareham-based transport specialist Boarhunt scooped the Environmental Haulier of the Year accolade for its efforts to save the planet.

The firm, whose trucks can be seen helping at the scene of accidents and breakdowns on roads across Hampshire an
d West Sussex, won the award for its work across its huge fleet of vehicles, many of which are based at Fareham and Portsmouth close to the M27 and A27.

It reflects the million-pound investment made by Boarhunt in an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint.

In the past 18 months new Euro 5 tractor units have been fitted with the CanBus computer software and incorporated into the fleet.

This gizmo tracks each vehicle's carbon footprint so drivers can adapt their driving to improve fuel consumption and cut down on polluting emissions.

Boarhunt has also invested in a leading vehicle tracking system which allows drivers to get to and from incidents or non-emergency jobs without sitting in long queues.

Ian Mulholland, the managing director of Boarhunt, was thrilled with the award.

He said: 'We are delighted to receive this award and see it as a significant sign of progress in cutting our emissions and our carbon footprint.

'We have invested heavily in this side of the business and it's great to be recognised for our achievements,' he added.

The awards, for 2007, were sponsored by NYK Group Europe.

Presenting the award, Hans de Vink, NYK Europe's chief environmental officer, said: 'I am delighted to see an NYK Europe haulage vendor making such a significant investment in managing its environmental responsibility.'

Boarhunt is one of the south coast's leading recovery, haulage and garage services businesses with operating depots at Fareham, Portsmouth, Rownhams Services on the M27, Southampton and Ferndown.

Founded in 1964, the company has grown in recent years and now employs more than 200 people.

A core element of the company's strategy is heavy investment in people, vehicles and technology across its operating divisions and the distinctive Boarhunt logo is now a familiar sight across the south of England.
