Southern Water has apologised after a blunder meant that customers' personal details were e-mailed to about 1,000 people.
Customers were stunned to receive a massive Southern Water e-mail containing details of up to 400 people who had applied to receive a free water butt from the firm.

Names, addresses, and dates when installation teams would visit customers' propert
ies were accidentally copied into a mass e-mail, sent on Monday morning.

The incident sparked fears that the information could leave householders vulnerable to rogue callers posing as installers.

Kit Cartier, 55, from Fawcett Road, Southsea, was just one of hundreds affected.

She said: 'I think it's worrying. It leaves it open to crime, because there may be a very small element who might be trying to make hay out of this.

'They've got so many details, they could turn up and pretend to be with the company.

'But those details could be used for other things too. There may be other repercussions, so I'm concerned.'

The residents on the e-mail list had been taking advantage of an offer to install free 190-litre water butts in a bid to promote efficient use of water in Portsmouth.

More than 5,000 households applied to the scheme – run jointly with Portsmouth City Council – between July 7 and August 31, and about 1,000 homes were due to have the butts installed by the company.

Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock said: 'I'm appalled. If they have done that then they ought to put out some explanation pretty quickly, because they shouldn't give that out in any circumstances. Somebody should have checked first.'

Southern Water apologised for the error, but said it was the contractor employed to install the butts, Straight plc, which had messed up.

Chief executive Jonathan Straight said: 'We're in the process of issuing an apology but don't believe any harm has come of this. No sensitive information has been revealed.'

Police said no-one had made a formal complaint.

Complaints against Southern Water, Portsmouth City Council and it's Contractors seem to be a daily occurence. What do residents think should be done?Certainly make a complaint to the Police and your ward councillors and see what happens, also take the oppurtunity to ask searching questions of Southern Water and Portsmouth City Council representatives at the West Southsea Neighbourhood Forum on Monday 22nd September at St Jude's Church, 19.00hrs

USE "Bcc:" NOT "To:" or "Cc:" in emails !

That way, all recipients see only the sender's address and their own. It goes some way to preventing active email addresses falling into the lap of a potential spammer.

It's not a difficult concept to grasp but an increasing number of companies seem to be doing this sort of thing now (I have had this from Waters & Stanton, TWO departments within PCC, Black Cat Comedy Club at the Alma Arms and several others).

Obviously more training is required on the I.T. front, ISN'T IT?!!

Sorry graham, the address and names of the people where put in the emails. BCC would not have worked!!!!

As for sorting this out, Southern Water and the contractor are not goverement bodies and are therefore NOT exempt from protecting your details (like goverment agencies are). The data protection act SHOULD be used against Southern Water and there contractor.

Simple. You may even get compensation!

Strewth, that's even worse !!!

Time for SW to be called into the Headmaster's Office and given a caning, I think.

Compensation is a marvellous word, but guess who really pays for those who had their details inadvertantly issued.... Not Southern Water or it's executives... you may not see the increase this year, but next year you'll pay for it...
It just shows that there is nothing Southern Water can do to lose it's licence.
It can flood sewage annually and blame God,
under finance it's treatments and pumping stations blaming existing infra-structure,
leak private details of it's customers to other customers.. But as I keep saying - as long as the shareholders see a healthy return on their investments, then life will carry on until a bigger farce finally drowns some poor Portsmouth residents and they eventually cannot deny liability....

Nothing related to Southern Water surprises me. Neighbours from Hell and totally incompetent. They should not be let loose with a water pistol.
