Pub giant JD Wetherspoon has taken over a bar in Portsmouth.
The firm, which already owns five pubs in the city and another six in the surrounding region, has added The White Swan in Guildhall Walk to its empire – just yards away from another Wetherspoon's venue, The Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The White Swan had been owned by the Laurel Pub Company, which collapsed in March. It had been run since then by The Bay Restaurant Group, which also controls Guildhall venue Yates's.

The company said it would be taking on around 20 extra staff.

Eddie Gershon, speaking on behalf of the company, said: 'It won't just be that we spend £10,000 on a lick of paint, we will spend hundreds of thousands to redevelop it.'

JD Wetherspoon said it had been considering moving into the old United Reformed Church in Victoria Road South, Southsea, but had no plans to take it over.
