Local captains of industry have given thanks to the departing chair of the South East England Development Agency for helping their companies.
Executives from the VT Group and satellite firm Inmarsat heaped thanks on Jim Brathwaite for helping to score millions of pounds in public funds to support private sector work in Portsmouth, including the Alphasat project and the Royal Navy's carrier project.
On the Alphasat project for the European Space Agency Project, Mr Braithewaite personally secured £12m in funding to shore up a bid by Astrium in Portsmouth to win some of the work.
Inmarsat vice president Chris McLaughlin said: 'His support was instrumental in ensuring the next thirty years of Inmarsat success.'
Paul Lester, CEO of former shipbuilder the VT Group, also praised Mr Brathwaite and SEEDA for helping to retain the naval base.
He said: 'Jim knows how business works and he was able see the whole picture.'
