Northern Quarter keystone firm John Lewis' like-for-like sales were 13 per cent down last week.
The group said its crucial pre-Christmas sales had been hit early in the week by the announcement that VAT would be cut by 2.5 per cent to 15 per cent.

But sales picked up slightly after the group passed on the VAT reduction early.
