Work will begin in a few weeks on demolishing a derelict seafront cafe to make way for an Italian restaurant.
On September 1 bulldozers will move in and demolish the Marina Café, Southsea, opposite St Helen's Parade.
The controversial new restaurant in its place will be designed to look like a boat and a flying bird.
The two-storey Italian restaurant will have a balcony and terrace for diners to enjoy views out over the Solent, and a cafe on the ground floor.
Councillors objected to the plans in July 2007, because they thought the two-storey design would not fit in with lower buildings in the two conservation zones protecting the area.
But planning inspector David Hogger overturned their decision.
The new restaurant and cafe will open Monday to Thursday from 7am to midnight, 7am to 1am at weekends, closing at 11pm on Sunday nights.
Demolition work was due to begin in May, but it was then moved back to September.

I hope the architect's design has taken into account protection from the crashing waves coming over the breakwater during the winter south-westerly gales. If not he is likely to be paying large sums of compensation or facing bankcruptcy. I can understand the planners and planning committee not taking this into account, because we all know they are incompetent, but, why do you think there were one storey buildings there in the first place?

Scourge you seem to have a problem reading as the planning committee did not approve the building the planning inspector did, so do you think you were being negative for the sake of it?

Hi Why,
I have read my post again and it is not very clear. I am actually criticising the Planning Inspector. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

The state of that part of the seafront defies belief at present. It is difficult to comprehend that it is part of a seaside city in Summer. Virtually anything short of a sewage works built there would improve it.

So let's wish the new venture good luck and not carp eh?!!
