Superstore gets the nod to build

Supermarket giant Tesco has been given a green light to build a superstore in the heart of Fareham.
It comes after local government secretary Hazel Blears revealed she would not force a public inquiry into the controversial proposal, despite fierce opposition from many in Gosport fearful of even worse traffic congestion on the busy A32.

The decision means the approval of the 70,000sq ft superstore in Quay Street given by Fareham planners in the summer now stands.

The Tory leader of Fareham Borough Council, Sean Woodward, believes the superstore on an old foundry site could be finished by the end of next year.

Ms Blears ruled there was no need for an inquiry because the development was not of national or regional significance.

Gosport Borough Council asked for the plan to be called in by the government because of the effect it would have on the A32 bottleneck linking the two towns and the impact it would have on Gosport businesses.

A delighted Cllr Woodward said: 'This is excellent news for the borough of Fareham in general and the town centre in particular.

'It's been a long-held aspiration of the council to get a high-quality large food store into Fareham town centre.'

He added: 'The decision not to interfere in our planning decision removes the last hurdle to delivering this aim which has been supported in a number of residents' surveys.

'I look forward to welcoming Tesco to Fareham.'

But Cllr Peter Langdon, of Gosport's Tory party, said: 'The whole of Gosport council wanted this called in and it's a great pity that it hasn't happened and that this can now go ahead.

'This will add more traffic to the already congested A32 and while they are building it and improving the Quay Street roundabout the traffic problems will be drastic.

'It will also mean that some people will do their shopping in Fareham rather than Gosport, which is not good for the town.'

Fareham residents have also voiced concerns, worried about the impact of the store on parking.

Fareham town centre resident Mick Williams, 59, of Southampton Road, said: 'I'm in favour of Tesco coming into the town centre but what has always concerned me is the loss of parking spaces for residents.'

What was wrong with the comments above? Didn't see the second but the first simply pointed out that Fareham Borough Council isn't getting a Tesco for nothing and vice versa, and that FBC has ignored those who have objections as usual - on their own turf as well as off it. Some people have very thin skins, don't they? Either that or things get a little close for comfort.

It makes you wonder how some people get to where they are, that's for sure. Getting bad press deleted probably helps. :O))))))))

With the supermarket to be situated at the A32, Gosport will now be sponsored by NCP.

Let's just close Gosport down until further notice - nobody goes there now anyway.

There is no doubt in anyones mind that this development will cause further congestion at the Quay street roundabout. Cllr Woodward knows it as does anyone with an ounce of common sense who regularly uses that roundabout. He insults our intelligence otherwise. And when the inevitable happens I have no doubt that he will not admit to getting it wrong but then it will be Fareham and Goport residents who will suffer.
The roundabout should have been replaced with something that took traffic round on to Eastern way with a modification to the flyover to take trafic in both directions from Eastern to Western way.
Mark my words.

Ranter you are so right. There have been problems with this roundabout & the so called one way system in fareham for more than 30 years. When the single lane fly over was put in we were told it could only be single lane because they couldn't afford a dual carriageway flyover. Eastern & Western Way were meant as a bypass. Theyve never been because the planners cocked up the road system years ago. Fareham & Gosport residents have paid the price ever since. These improvements are going to do little to improve things.

Of course councillor Woodward won't admit to getting it wrong - he never does. At least it will be scant consolation, he won't be wasting public money on this folly.

Its the Tesco shareholders who should also be concerned. Tesco only got planning permission as they agreed to pay for the roundabout.

I don't think Woodward cares very much about what other people think and certainly not those from Gosport. He wrote the book on how to break friends and alienate people. :)))))
