Lizz Clarke, 49, is the managing director of Logical Creative Marketing Ltd.
Position: Managing director of Logical Creative Marketing Ltd

Job description: I am responsible for the growth and direction of the company. I spend a lot of my time in meetings with senior staff, making sure they are following the strategy day-to-day, or with clients. I like to stay closely in contact with our clients so LCM adapts its services according to what our clients need.

How long have you been doing it? I founded LCM in 1989 and I would not have called myself a managing director until about five years ago, because that was when I really began to grow the company. Before that I was pretty well a marketing consultant, doing all the client work myself with the support of admin staff and associates.

How did you get into it and why? I was offered a job as a marketing director for the UK arm of an international company. As I had just had my first child, I didn't want to commute to London every day to do that job, so I negotiated to do it as a consultant from home, and LCM was born. That company effectively became LCM's first client and we grew them from £2m to £12m over 10 years. They recommended us to others and it went from there.

What do you enjoy about it and dislike about it? I can honestly say I love every minute of it. The only time I get vaguely frustrated and it has lessened a lot over the years, is when companies expect us to be able to solve all their problems as a result of one short conversation and pay tuppence ha'penny for it. Marketing is a real skill, and transforms businesses when it is given the right investment.
The thing I most enjoy at the moment is coaching my team to deliver the strategy. They really are a hugely positive bunch of clever people.

What would be your idea of a perfect day? My perfect day would include a creative meeting with the staff at LCM, where we are dreaming up a solution to a client's marketing need, a meeting with a favourite client, and an evening where all our clients sweep the board at the News Excellence Awards! To top it off I would be the compere because I love doing that job, and I get a buzz from compering events for the Portsmouth & South East Hants Chamber of Commerce.
