MORE passengers flown from Southampton Airport this year than in 2014.

It has seen 148,000 customers in March – 14 per cent higher than the previous year.

Managing director of airport Dave Lees, pictured, said: ‘Our passengers have been making the most of the final weeks of snow, heading for the Pyrenees and Alps on ski breaks.’

Figures show that international passengers going through the airport increased by eight per cent and domestic passengers were 17 per cent up on 2014.

Mr Lees added: ‘Southampton Airport is now gearing up for an eventful summer season with several new destinations being launched in the coming weeks.’

The four new routes include Antwerp with VLM, Milan and Corsica with Flybe, and a peak summer service to Lorient in France with Eastern Airways.

Popular summer routes such as Verona, Palma and Alicante begin again in May. As well as new routes, tour operators including Thomas Cook, Thomson, First Choice and Prestige will begin programmes from the airport next month.

Aberdeen, Leeds, Newcastle, Belfast and Manchester within the UK were those with the most growth year-on-year.

Dublin, Amsterdam, Lleida (Pyrenees), Grenoble, La Rochelle and Faro also experienced an increase in passenger numbers.
