PLANS to build a discount food store have been submitted.

Aldi wants to build a supermarket off Southampton Road, Paulsgrove, and has now lodged designs with Portsmouth City Council.

If the authority approves the plan then the chain’s store would create 40 new full and part-time positions.

The firm wants a 1,254sq m store with a car park with 124 spaces on the brownfield former Paulsgrove Industrial Estate site, near Tesco North Harbour.

It says it has received 219 responses to its own consultation – with 96 per cent of those indicating support.

Phillip Warner, Aldi property director said: ‘Our plans have been overwhelmingly well-received locally and we’d like to thank those who provided us with their views.’

A decision is expected by November, the firm has said.
