‘I wanted to be doing something different. I felt I was ready to experience the world of work and went online to explore the possibilities.’

Darcy, 17, filled in an application for an apprenticeship through HTP Training. After a meeting at the company’s training centre at 1000 Lakeside in North Harbour, she chose to be put forward for Anne Gill Eyecare.

‘I like meeting different people and thought retail would provide me with variety and the opportunity to learn different skills,’ said Darcy, from Copnor.

‘As well as working in the practice and helping with customers, once a month I meet with my supervisor from HTP Training who sets me assignments for my Level 2 diploma in business administration.

‘I earn money and gain experience while learning, so I feel much more independent.’

Owner Anne Gill said: ‘Taking on an apprentice is something I have wanted to do for a long time.

‘Darcy has a lovely disposition, enthusiasm and it is really useful to see your business through a fresh pair of eyes.’
