BAE Systems’ bid to return to the shipyard it only recently vacated would see its Maritime Services division use the facility to improve the maintenance programme of the navy’s Hunt-class mine countermeasures vessels.

The firm estimates this would sustain around 200 jobs in Portsmouth but also free up capacity elsewhere on the base for it to develop more commercial ship repair work.

BAE already does repair work for firms including Wightlink which has maintenance work on its ferries done at the base.

The Royal Navy’s Hunt-class minehunters include HMS Ledbury, Cattistock, Brocklesby, Middleton, Chiddingfold, Atherstone, Hurworth and Quorn.

The firm announced in November 2013 that it was to vacate the shipyard in Portsmouth’s naval base to move its shipbuilding operations to Scotland.
