MORE than 500 people attended an open day at Fareham Leisure Centre to get in the Olympic spirit and try out a range of sports.

People flocked to the centre to celebrate a summer of great British sport and hold one of the torches used when the torch relay passed through the town.

And there was the chance to try fitness class taster sessions, watch a performance by the local dance school, and have a go on the climbing wall or take the rowing challenge.

Youngsters also got the chance to meet Peppa Pig, drive Kiddi Karts, have their faces painted and try some arts and crafts, while older children tried Sumo suit wrestling and accompanied taster sessions in the gym.

Nigel Ashton, activities manager at the centre, said: ‘We want everyone in Fareham to get their 30 minutes of activity five times a week so it was great to have so many people at the centre having fun while being active. We are already helping a large part of the Fareham community play sport and keep fit and healthy on a weekly basis.’
