A LITTLE piece of Portsmouth is helping residents, businesses and mariners in Boston, USA, stay safe from fire.

The Boston Fire Department has got a new top-of-the-range FireStorm 70 fireboat, built by MetalCraft Marine and fully loaded with Portsmouth-based Raymarine and FLIR electronics.

The boat can pump up to 12,000 gallons per minute of water through its fire monitors and is fully equipped with chemical, biological, and radiological defence emergency response capabilities.

It has a top speed of 35 knots, and is powered by water jet drives so it can manoeuvre quickly around the harbour.

The Boston Fire Department chose a Raymarine E-Series Widescreen navigation system to guide them across the waters in and around Boston.

It also has a FLIR Voyager thermal imaging camera with specialised enhancements for marine firefighting duties.
