CALLS have been made for Portsmouth City Council to switch to a system giving councillors from all political groups a say in decisions.

The Lib Dems want to see the authority’s cabinet being replaced with a cross-party committee.

For it to work, they believe a ‘shadow’ committee should be formed for a year to see how the cabinet works before replacing it full-time.

For example, a group of councillors from different parties would debate a matter before it goes to cabinet, and it could decide whether to adopt their ideas or not.

Lib Dem councillors are putting forward the proposal at the next meeting of the full council on Monday.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Lib Dem group leader, said: ‘It’s a step towards collaborative decision-making which I think is helpful.

‘Having a shadow committee means we would still have scrutiny before decisions are made as four scrutiny panels are being abolished.’

The meeting will be held at Portsmouth Guildhall from 2pm.
