In an email to Rolls-Royce workers, the firm, which is owned by BMW, said: ‘The BMW Group believes that the UK is better as a member of the EU than it would be outside it.’

The message added an open letter signed by 200 business leaders would also include the signature of AG Board member Ian Robertson.

It added: ‘Free trade is important for international business.

‘Rolls-Royce Motor Cars exports motor cars throughout the EU and imports a significant number of parts through the region.’

The letter says more than half of the firm’s Minis built in the UK are exported to the EU, with 150,000 cars imported from Europe each year.

And it said the firm would have to abide by EU regulations even in event of a vote to leave in the June 23 referendum.

The firm also said there was a ‘significant benefit’ in the ‘easy movement’ of people.
