A CATERING group that gives youngsters a path into employment has more than doubled its number of trainees.

RKdia will enrol up to 100 young people for work experience this year at its base at Knighton Corner, in Horndean.

The group will also open a tea room in nearby Merchistoun Hall in the summer, providing trainee placements for waiting staff.

Last year, RKdia took 40 youths – nine of whom are now employed within the catering team and another four have gone on to further education.

Blue Smith, 18, from Waterlooville, started as a trainee and within 13 weeks secured full time employment. He said: ‘I went there to get a bit of experience and it gave me an insight into what it’s like to work in a kitchen and I really enjoyed it.’
