A NEW store has opened in Gosport’s town centre, thanks to a grant scheme run by the borough council.

SIC Digital, in High Street, opened earlier this month and is the first business to take advantage of the empty unit support scheme, run by Gosport Borough Council and the Town Team.

Matt Harris, from the photo and digital accessory shop, said it already had a branch in Selsey and wanted to expand.

He said: ‘We wanted a larger town with a bigger footfall, but with a similar demographic.

‘Gosport seemed the ideal choice with its mix of chain and independent stores.

‘The grant has assisted in making the expansion possible and has allowed us to invest in the signage and fit-out of the premises.’

Lin Wilson is vice-chair of the Town Team, which has a fund of £110,000, part of which is spent on the scheme.

She added: ‘This is exactly what we wanted the scheme to achieve. It has brought an empty unit back into use.’

As previously reported, the scheme offers a grant of £7,000 along with discounted fees.
