CHICHESTER City Centre Partnership has announced 133 independent shops are taking part in this year’s Independents’ Day celebrations – 23 more than last year.

Following the success of last year’s showcase, the partnership is once again supporting independent businesses in line with the national Independents’ Day campaign on Friday, July 4.

With bunting orders reaching 1,500 metres and 1,000 balloons being distributed across the 133 outlets taking part, this year’s showcase runs from Monday next week.

The aim of the week-long event is to encourage more people to shop locally and support independent outlets.

City centre partnership chairman Andrew Finnamore said: ‘Our independent shops and businesses are what make this city different as a shopping and commercial destination so initiatives like this are important.

‘We’re pleased that 133 independent outlets have stepped up to join in, but it’s about more than just bunting.

‘This is an opportunity for the businesses to show what they’ve got – why should people use them instead of the chain stores?

‘More often than not, they can offer better product knowledge and a more personal service and this is their chance to prove it.’

Many of the shops taking part have events and promotions running throughout the week and particularly on July 4, to remind visitors and shoppers what the smaller stores can offer them.

Visitors and shoppers are encouraged to pop into independent outlets to show their support.
