SHOPPERS will be entertained by a procession of three huge lions as part of Chinese New Year celebrations at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth.

The show will mark the start of the Year of the Rabbit, which began yesterday, with two colourful parades.

The lion dancers will visit businesses throughout the centre and where – in keeping with traditions – they will offer blessings for a prosperous year in exchange for ‘lucky money.’

Hundreds of visitors are set to descend on the shopping centre for the event, which will also see displays of traditional Chinese folk dancing from the Portsmouth Chinese Association.

Martial arts displays, tai chi and chi kung demonstrations will also be held in Central Square.

And in the avenues visitors will get the chance to try their hand at calligraphy, Chinese brush painting and balloon modelling. Shoppers will also be able to discover their Chinese horoscope.

The processions will be held at noon and 3pm on February 13.
