A PORTSMOUTH hotel has become one of the first in its group to share in a £223m investment.

The Portsmouth Travelodge, in Kingston Crescent, has been given a £400,000 overhaul of its bedrooms, restaurants and reception area.

The firm says demand for its hotel rooms in Portsmouth is growing, so the refurbishment has come at an ideal time.

The 108-room hotel, which was opened in 1999, has been refurbished in just one month without any disturbance to the day-to-day operation of the hotel.

The work was carried out by Travelodge’s in-house maintenance team.

Neil Turner, Portsmouth Travelodge hotel manager, said: ‘We are very excited to have been selected as one of the first hotels across the Travelodge estate to benefit from this investment.

‘The work was carried out with no disturbance to our day-to-day operation and the feedback we have received from customers has been outstanding.’

Mr Turner added: ‘The demand for good quality branded budget accommodation in the Portsmouth area is growing at great pace and now that we have a new room design we are offering even greater value in the local marketplace.’

By the end of the year, Travelodge plans to have refitted more than half of all its rooms, with 5,000 completed by the end of May alone.

By autumn 2014, almost 90 per cent of Travelodge’s estate will incorporate the new room design, meaning the makeover will see an average of more than 50 rooms refurbished every single day for the next 18 months.

The scale of the refurbishment programme means 1m man hours will go into the refit, along with 60,000 tins of paint and 30,000 new beds – enough to cover nine football pitches.

The firm is also planning to expand its business in Portsmouth, adding a 200-bed hotel in The Hard to its existing facilities in Kingston Crescent and in Hilsea.

Subject to planning permission it is planning to work with Gunwharf Quays owner Land Securities to convert Europa House, the former Pall Europe building, into the city’s biggest hotel.

The project is expected to cost around £10m and create 50 jobs locally.
