WITH young people collecting their exam results, a construction training board is calling on more of them to join the industry.

CITB, the Industry Training Board for construction, has warned that if the next generation of construction workers is not recruited, there will be a skills shortage in the area.

Roger Stone, sector strategy manager for the Solent, said: ‘With 21 per cent of local construction workers nearing retirement, we are facing a potential skills timebomb.

‘So we urge local young people to consider construction as one of their options as they think about taking their next step.’

Latest figures from CITB highlight that 21 per cent of construction workers in the south east are aged 55 and over, with a further 26 per cent aged between 45 and 54.
