A SENIOR councillor hopes a pub in Portsmouth put up for sale by pub giant Wetherspoon will not close for good.

Tory planning and regeneration boss Luke Stubbs says it would make sense for The Trafalgar in Edinburgh Road, to carry on as a pub or similar late-night venue.

Speaking to The News, Cllr Stubbs said: ‘It’s a large building in the middle of the city.

‘There is a market for the continuation of a late-night premises or club.

‘The Trafalgar is quite well located for that sort of use.

‘I hope a new commercial operator can be found for it.’

Wetherspoon has put the pub on the market along with 33 other venues in the UK as part of a ‘periodic review’ of its stock.

Company boss Tim Martin has said the pubs put up for sale have up to 30 per cent poorer sales than others it operates.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon has said the pub will remain open until a buyer is found, and staff will be given the option of working at another Wetherspoon venue.
