THE creation of a new home for King Richard School is to finally go ahead after the plans received the full backing of Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee.

The existing Paulsgrove school will be replaced with a new £11m building catering for up to 1,000 students.

Work will start later this year and be complete by the summer of 2017.

Students will then move over and the current school will be demolished. Tory councillor Scott Harris, planning committee member, said: ‘This application is welcome in my view. Since as long as I can remember, this school has needed a lot of work.’

Labour councillor John Ferrett said he was concerned whether the school would be large enough to cope with the expected increase in children going into secondary education. But he praised the ‘ingenuity’ of the council for covering a £2m shortfall in the project – mostly funded by the government.
