BUSINESSES are being offered discounted rates to move into empty shops.

East Hampshire District Council is hoping the move will mean a boost for high streets.

Firms that set up in shops that have been unoccupied for more than a year will receive a 50 per cent discount to their business rates for 18 months.

Councillor Ferris Cowper, leader of the council, said: ‘This scheme brings a genuine incentive to enterprising local retailers who are looking at launching their new businesses.

‘We know small and medium-sized businesses are a vital part of our economy and we are committed to supporting them and helping them succeed.’

The government will reimburse the council the lost business rates.
