A FORMER business minister has called on BAE Systems to delay the closure of its shipyard in Portsmouth.

John Denham, MP for Southampton Itchen, yesterday called on the government and BAE to delay the closure.

His call came after replies to questions asked in Parliament.

‘These parliamentary replies reveal a shocking lack of planning by the government,’ he said.

‘It was the government’s decision to close Portsmouth as soon as possible – even taking aircraft carrier work away from Portsmouth.’
