SELECTED car parks run by Portsmouth City Council will be free on Small Business Saturday next month to encourage residents to shop locally.

On December 6, car parks in Wootton Street and London Road, Cosham, Stubbington Avenue, North End, Ashby Place, Southsea and Clarence Street in the city centre will be free all day. Council parking spaces along Fratton Road will also be free.

The day is a national campaign that aims to give high streets and independent traders a boost. This year is the second time the UK has staged the event, which started in the US.

It is supported by the Federation of Small Businesses and backed by Portsmouth City Council.

Donna Jones, leader of the council, said: ‘A lot of work is being done on attracting major investment into Portsmouth.

‘But small businesses are the lifeblood of neighbourhoods, and we need to encourage them as much as possible too.

‘That’s why we’re offering free use of these car parks.’
