Garry Farne, retail business manager for the Southern Co-operative Emsworth store, is gearing up to run the London Marathon in April for children’s charity Whizz-Kidz.
Garry has been busy fundraising and has committed to raising a minimum £1,700 for Whizz-Kidz but hopes to beat that and has a personal target of £3,500.
He said: ‘The money we raise really is going towards a cause that helps make a difference to children’s lives.’
Customers and colleagues from across Portsmouth have also been helping, partying the night away recently at The Southern Co-operative Emsworth store’s Disco Party where they raised almost £300.
The evening, which was held at Cosham Conservative Club, featured a DJ and a buffet and the money raised has gone to Garry’s marathon sponsorship.
Garry said: ‘I am thrilled with the amount of money our Disco Party managed to raise. In total we’ve now raised more than £2,000 in sponsorship for Whizz-Kidz.’
In addition to the Disco Party, Garry is planning more fundraisers in the run-up to the marathon on April 24.
A bumper raffle is due to take place including prizes such as £100 Southern Co-op vouchers, afternoon tea for two at the Langstone Hotel, Hayling Island, four tickets to Hampshire Cricket Club, two tickets to Premier Enclosure at Sandown Park Racecourse, two tickets to Brighton Racecourse and 18 other exclusive prizes.
Tickets for the raffle cost just £1 each and are on sale now at The Southern Co-operative Emsworth store.
The draw will take place on April 2 outside the store.
The charity Whizz-Kidz transforms the lives of disabled children by providing the vital equipment, support and life skills they need, when they need them, giving them the chance to develop to their full potential.
Heather Ridley, Whizz-Kidz corporate account manager, said: ‘We are delighted to have Garry as part of Team Whizz-Kidz for the London Marathon 2016.’
