He was handed the gong at the Utility Week Stars Awards.

Stephen, 66, who began his career in the gas industry as an apprentice in 1965, said he was surprised to have won.

He said: ‘I’ve had a very happy and rewarding career and it’s great to be recognised in this way before my retirement in August.’

The award was given to him to mark his long service and devotion to the industry.

General manager of SGN’s Solent depot, Paul Rose, added: ‘We’re delighted for Steve and this recognition for his incredible 51 years’ service is very much deserved.’

SGN won two of the eight prizes at the ceremony. CEO John Morea said: ‘My congratulations to all our teams nominated and winning.’
