THERE is less than a week left to file a tax return online.

All outstanding 2010/11 Self Assessment returns must be sent online to HMRC by Tuesday, January 31.

Late returns will incur a £100 penalty, whether there’s tax to pay or not, and the longer the return is overdue the higher the penalty becomes.

HMRC is urging people to file their tax returns before the cut-off date, to avoid any delay.

A spokeswoman said: ‘As the deadline draws nearer, the number of people sending their return increases.

Last year, this culminated in more than 570,000 people filing online on the 31 January – the busiest day of the 2009/10 filing calendar.

While HMRC’s systems are able to cope with these large volumes of online returns, inevitably, at busier periods, it may take people a little longer to complete their online return.’
