A COMMUNITY garden which champions the benefits of local produce has been shortlisted for a £1,000 boost.
Southsea Greenhouse will be among other local groups hoping to get their green fingers on the Big Green Leaf Community Award at an environmental family fun day at Portsmouth’s Ocean Retail Park.
The Underneath The Big Green Leaf event on Saturday will enlist the help of a cavalcade of characters including Bugella Burrows and Walter Droplet, who will urge families to engage in fun and interactive sustainability activities from beneath a giant inflatable leaf canopy.
Calls are being made for other local community groups to join Southsea Greenhouse in showcasing their work, and shoppers will be able to vote with tokens for the cause that they feel is most deserving of the prize of up to £1,000 towards their environmental project or initiative.
Sue Stokes, one of the founders of the initiative, said she was happy to put the social enterprise forward.
She said: ‘With a community garden at Canoe Lake, our supporters and hundreds of volunteers have helped us grow from a fledgling social enterprise into a working community co-operative.
‘We formed to tap into the amazing resources and talents across the city and promote local produce.
‘We wanted to change the way people shop, celebrate the creativity of the area, and improve what you get from our seafront.’
The Big Green Leaf event takes place at Ocean Retail Park on Saturday from 11am until 4pm, where there will be a range of free family-friendly activities and giveaways.
