THE team elected to regenerate a high street will clean empty shop fronts – with the help of a community payback scheme.

Gosport’s Town Team have enlisted the help of those in Hampshire Probation Trust’s Community Payback scheme, who will now clean the windows of empty shops each month, starting on January 5.

As previously reported in The News, members of the Town Team were elected earlier this year to regenerate the High Street and help oversee a fund of £110,000 to boost Gosport’s shopping areas.

Graham Jacobs, chairman of the Town Team, said he hopes this will make the area look better and have an impact for Gosport residents, with shop owners already offering to lend buckets of water.

He said: ‘Engaging with this organisation, I do believe that it’s the kids who have done a bit wrong paying back in the community.

‘I think that it becomes their High Street.

‘If they’re out in the evening with their mates eating a kebab and see someone doing something to the empty units, if there’s 10 of them, at least one of them will say “oi, don’t do that”.’
