A GROUP aiming to buy and restore South Parade Pier has been given a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The pier is currently administered by a group of six businessmen, who claim to have bought it, however the sale is not yet finalised.
Trust chairman Leon Reis said the money would be used to plan for the possibility of the consortium failing to fix the pier.
Mr Reis said the trust would call tenders and appoint leisure industry experts to develop a business plan with specialist commercial advice.
He said: ‘HLF has thrown the pier a financial lifeline, a chance to prove community ownership can guarantee a sustainable long-term future.
‘But to survive as a pier, it must not only be financially viable.
‘It simply isn’t a pier if it doesn’t offer safe public access from end to end again.’
