Taking over a hair and beauty salon was a big step for Chris and Tennille O’Neill.

The pair had never owned a business before but that did not stop them making big plans for the salon in Gosport.

In four-and-a-half years, House of Hair and Beauty has been transformed into a shabby-chic salon with the latest extension doubling the size of the site.

They have also concentrated on promoting the business through a website and social media to get more customers.

Tennille, 34, said: ‘I used to work at House of Hair and Beauty before we decided to take over.

‘We became the owners in August 2010 and we have been slowly building it up since then.

‘The last couple of months have been big for us because we have extended the salon and hired more staff.

‘When we took over, it had only been running for two years so promotion was a big part of our plan for the future.’

Chris also works as a personal trainer and has experience in promoting small businesses.

The 34-year-old added: ‘To build up our customer base, we looked at different offers, loyalty cards, things like that just because it wasn’t that well-known.

‘I could help Tennille with these sort of behind-the-scenes bits.

‘It was important to us to get our name out there.’

By 2013, the business was flourishing and Chris and Tennille were at capacity with staff and clients.

Rather than stay as they were, the pair decided to look towards extending the property.

Tennille said: ‘The decision to expand was a big one for us.

‘We had to be sure that it would be financially viable going forward.

‘After some initial trouble getting the site next to ours, we finally bought it and expanded.

‘We just wanted to be bigger, better and brighter.’

Along with the extension, the salon has hired a new beauty therapist and a new stylist and are looking at the possibility of hiring a second new stylist.

House of Hair and Beauty is also accessible for people with disabilities which was something they wanted to do when expanding and with that complete, they can look forward to the future.

Tennille added: ‘Since taking over, we have tried to be at the top level of service all the time but at reasonable prices.

‘We look at the details like offering coffee with flavoured syrups and ensuring we have the right team.

‘Small changes like that have made a massive difference.’
