PORT Solent shopping centre has reported its highest footfall figures in June this year since records began in June 2009.
Dan Hughes, centre manager for Port Solent, said there had been 140,000 visitors in June.
That compares to 124,000 visitors to the centre in June 2010. And the difference, he says, has come from the family events that are now run there, the closure of the Whiteley shopping centre, and free parking. ‘We’re really delighted with that,’ said Mr Hughes.
Port Solent’s sales suffered after Gunwharf Quays opened, and because of a reputation of trouble at some of its bars.
But that has all changed now, with the Mermaid pub becoming a Harvester restaurant, and more families choosing to go there to eat on a night out and shop during the day.
‘It’s fair to say that for the last few years Port Solent has had a slightly stale image, but that’s not the case now at all,’ added Mr Hughes.
