HUGE holes have appeared in a town centre as an electricity company battles to restore power to shops.

It has been a difficult fortnight for many traders in Waterlooville as electricity and heating has gone off intermittently.

The vast majority of shops now have electricity after Southern Electric sorted out an emergency supply.

But shopkeepers are still waiting to be connected to the main network.

Cath Percival, manager of the British Heart Foundation shop, said: ‘It’s definitely a big hole – it goes right round the corner of the shop.

‘Unfortunately with the wind the barriers have ended up in the hole.

‘We just have to put up with it because there’s nothing we can do.

‘We have got an emergency supply now.

‘They have given us a line from outside into our main box.’

A spokeswoman for Southern Electric said: ‘Our teams are still out there working and putting the network back to where it should be.’
