Hotel chain Travelodge has announced plans to open 36 sites next to pubs as part of a £100m expansion programme.
Travelodge, which has 453 hotels in the UK, including in Portsmouth, Chichester and Southampton, has teamed up with pub companies, including Greene King, Marston’s, Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) and JD Wetherspoon, to look for sites where they can jointly fund new developments.
Pubs are expected to receive a sales boost as guests at the hotels eat and drink there, while hotels are expected to prove more attractive by having a pub with a strong food offering on-site.
They estimate that their joint-expansion plans will create 550 new jobs by 2015.
In some cases hotels will be built next to existing pubs and in other sites the two will be built at the same time. Working together will reduce the cost of developments and allow the two businesses to share facilities such as car parks.
