PORTSMOUTH has been named as one of the most expensive holiday destinations in the country for travellers.

A survey compared the hotel rates for 30 popular destinations in the UK during the summer holiday period.

Top of the list was Edinburgh, but Portsmouth came in ninth place.

The top 10 table in full was: Edinburgh, Bath, London, St Ives, Oxford, Inverness, Brighton, York, Portsmouth, and Shanklin.

The average daily rate for the city’s cheapest available double room was £73.

The survey was carried out by hotel price comparison site cheaprooms.co.uk.
