Hundreds of people sign petition to keep mobility centre open

The British Red Cross Mobility Aids Facility at Lee-on-the-Solent Health Centre could be closing

People living and working in Lee-on-the-Solent are campaigning for the British Red Cross Mobility Aids Facility to stay where it is.

There are fears the centre, at Lee-on-the-Solent Health Centre, could face closure leaving people in the area with no access to wheelchairs or walking frames.

Peter Patterson, who runs All Seasons on Lee high street, has been helping with the petitions.

He said: ‘There has been a great deal of outpouring support for this centre.

‘Lots of people have signed the petitions and it’s been great to see that support.

‘People have been raising concerns with the possibility of the closure and the affect it could have on them or anyone they know who needs the facility.

‘Our catchment area has a high population of older people who need that service.

‘I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at how many people have come forward to show their support.’

The British Red Cross mobility centre provides short-term loans of mobility aids to people in need, including wheelchairs, commodes, walking sticks and frames.

No decision has been made on if the closure will happen.

Mr Patterson said: ‘The facility serves the community very well. It is well-used and I think its importance is shown by the number of people who want to keep it.

‘It is a wonderful outfit and provides security for people living around here.

‘They know that one day, if they need a mobility scooter or walking frame, there is the option to have one.

‘People like to know it is there should they need it.’

Residents of Lee-on-the-Solent say they are not giving up yet.

Jan Moore, 58, said the strength of the petition should prove people rely on the facility, off Manor Way.

‘Loads of people would be left with nowhere to turn to if they ever needed a wheelchair or walking frame,’ she said.

‘What is so great about the facility is how quickly they can offer an aid to people in need. People who only need it short-term do not want to be spending loads of money.

‘Hopefully they will stay where they are.’
