SOUTHERN Electric Power Distribution says it is ramping up its contingency plans to make sure the lights stay on in the Portsmouth area if severe weather hits the electricity network.

The company has spent around £8.1m on projects around Portsmouth with £90m devoted this year to upgrading and maintaining its network in central southern England.
