PORTSMOUTH’s Lord Mayor has been revisiting his days as an apprentice during a recent visit to BAE Systems.

Once a toolmaker’s apprentice in the dockyard himself, Cllr Frank Jonas was given a tour of the Apprentice Training Centre and received a presentation from some first-year craft apprentices.

The apprentices then presented Cllr Jonas with a decorative coaster, made during his tour of the facility, to commemorate his time in office.

He said: ‘This brought back many happy memories for me as I was a dockyard apprentice many years ago.

‘The enthusiasm and confidence of the apprentices that I met bodes well for the future.’

Apprentices have recently been placing and maintaining tools of intrinsic historical value found on the Naval Base in the dockyard museum as part of their development training.
