A NEW coastguard operation centre has opened in Fareham.

The National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC) became operational today as it looks to take over other stations around the UK.

Later this week, operations from Solent Coastguard will be based at the new centre, at Kites Croft, in Titchfield.

Over the course of the next 14 months, 18 centres around the UK will close and be based at the new hub with a number of staff transferring to the centre too.

Matt West, who has moved from Solent Coastguard to the NMOC, said: ‘Coastguards at the NMOC have been through an extensive training programme in the past few months, including live exercises with lifeboats and Coastguard Rescue Teams.

‘It’s an exciting time for us as we now have a new state-of-the-art operations centre where we can put our knowledge and skills to good use in coordinating search and rescue missions.’
