A NEW operator has taken over running the airfield at Solent Enterprise Zone.
Regional and City Airports Management is now in control at Daedalus in Lee-on-the-Solent, after Britten-Norman’s contract ran out.
It comes as a major upgrade at the airfield is due to take place this autumn.
Andy Wannell is the director of finance and resources at Fareham Borough Council.
He said: ‘This is another piece of good news for the Solent Enterprise Zone at Daedalus.
‘Having experienced operators in place will help make the site even more attractive to potential new tenants and builds on the work the council and our partners are doing to turn the site into the destination of choice for the engineering, aerospace, aviation and marine industries.’
As reported, the enterprise zone is expected to create 3,500 jobs by 2026.
And this autumn the airfield runway will be upgraded, with new hangar space nearby.
RCAM runs a number of airports in the country, including in Exeter and Blackpool.
Paul Rankin, the firm’s airport director, said: ‘It’s great to be on board at such an exciting time for this project.
‘We recognise we are taking on an important role and will be working very closely with stakeholders and tenants on the site to ensure that the airfield at Daedalus operates to the highest safety standards.’
Work on Fareham College’s Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Advanced Skills Training and Fareham council’s £5.3m innovation centre is under way at the site.
The zone is run by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, along with local councils and the Homes & Communities Agency.
Kevin Bourner, head of HCA in the area, said: ‘We are working hard to improve the airfield offer for businesses who want to use the airfield.
‘This appointment is a critical step on the road to achieving this aim and builds on our investment in the acquisition of the airfield and support for partners’ plans to upgrade it.’
RCAM will run the airfield until the end of the year.
The HCA is due to launch a bid to find an operator for a three-year contract starting in January.
