RAIL passengers are being advised to check timetables over the holidays.

The message has been issued by South West Trains, which will not be running passenger trains on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The firm says a normal Saturday service will run until early evening on Christmas Eve, before it has fewer trains.

Improvement work being carried out by Network Rail over Christmas will mean some services will be altered.

Work between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst and Romsey takes place on January 1 – with a bus replacement in place.

Ian Johnston, operations director for South West Trains, said: ‘We’ve been working with Network Rail to ensure its programme of improvement work causes the minimum disruption for our passengers.

‘We’ve planned our services for the festive period very carefully – including adding extra services for the new year.’
