PLANS for a new discount supermarket in Petersfield have been approved.

The South Downs National Park Authority gave the go-ahead to the former Focus DIY store in Station Road to be converted into a Lidl Store and Majestic Wine Merchant.

But the decision has been criticised by some people, who have argued it could have an impact on smaller businesses.

Anna Glanville-Hearson, of Frenchmans Road, Petersfield, said: ‘The decision is very depressing.

‘Some planning committee members made a spirited attempt to defend the character of Petersfield and say this was an opportunity to use the building for something more in keeping with the national park’s aims.’

The national park’s chief planner, Tim Slaney, said the store would not harm the vitality of Petersfield or affect its heritage.
